JQ Young Academy Day

Juni 19 @ 9:00 - 20:00

ATTENTION: we are pleased to confirm the date JUNE 19, 2020

An official launching of the Academy’s topic „Tenets, Variations, Transformations“.

Interdisciplinary tandem symposium with an award ceremony:
Datum: 19.06.2020
Ort: Normative Ordnungen, Max-Horkheimer-Str. 2, Campus Westend

From 9:00 Admission
9:15 – 9:30 Welcome speech/Opening of the symposium
Prof. Matthias Lutz-Bachmann JQYA Founding director
9:30 – 11:00 Tenets and Innovations
Dr Muriel Moser-Gerber
Dr Philipp Erbentraut
In many areas of science, irrevocable truths seem to prevail. Be it certain schools, topics or methods that form the specific canon of a discipline. These patterns are traditional tenets. In contrast, the panel will examine the question of how new research approaches (innovations) can be implemented and propagated in science. The speakers provide insight into their own scientific practice as well as the topics they are currently researching and how they come up with new ideas. The discussion will then also focus on the reactions young researchers experience when they challenge the dominant tenets and consider which framework conditions have a positive or negative effect on the acceptance of new approaches in research.

11:00 – 11:15 Coffee break
11:15 – 12:45 Tenets, Variations and Transformations under and above water
Dr Camelia Telteu
Dr Torben Riehl
This panel is concerned about two different fields that have in common “water“ such as abyssal hard rock, “under” the water, and terrestrial water cycle, “above” the water. Dr. Torben Riehl will present about how abyssal hard rock „transforms” from a known homogeneous ecosystem towards a much more unknown complex ecosystem that supports a high heterogeneity of species composition, rocks, habitats. Opposite, Dr. Camelia-Eliza Telteu will present about how global water models “transform” from a more complex information to a simpler information in simulating the terrestrial water cycle. They will also present very short information about how climate change affects the ocean and the water cycle as well as the positive people action to climate change.

12:45 – 13:15 Coffee break
13:15 – 14:45 Transformations in Neuronal Networks and their Variations in different applications
Dr Nadine Flinner
Dr Daniel Merk
Neuronal networks are a modern tool, which gain more and more attention during the last years in many areas of science. In this panel we will explain the basics behind this technique and will elucidate what kind of transformations the data undergo in order to make the predictions. Subsequently we will introduce in more detail the kind of networks which are used in our research and explain what can be archived using this modern technique. In the last step we will discuss and fathom with all present scientists if the application of this technique is interesting for their field or if it is already used.
